A Year in Korea: My KOICA Scholarship Journey
It's been a while since I wrote the last post for this blog.
For this post, I will write in English since I think this will be a good way for me to improve my English. However, my English is not very good, and I hope you can understand. According to the name of this blog, it has random topics. I would like to share my experience in pursuing my master's degree in South Korea as an awardee of the KOICA Scholarship Program in Agricultural Engineering at Kyungpook National University, Daegu. This post also marked a year after I arrived in South Korea, in August 2024.
This scholarship is provided for government officials in developing countries who are usually from Asia and Africa. South Korea, through KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency), provided several programs that are mostly in the Social and Economic field of study. I already knew about this scholarship in 2022, but at that time, I could not find a program that was suitable for me since I was from Mechanical Engineering. I worked in the Research Agency at the Research Center for Process and Manufacturing Industry Technology. I have been working there since 2020, mostly involved in the research project about the development of electric motors and manufacturing technology.
In 2023, I was involved in the research program for an electric tractor, which is a continuation of the electric motor application for agriculture. The agricultural sector was also being prioritized in Indonesia, with the energy sector as well. Then, in 2024, fortunately, there was an agriculture engineering program in KOICA Scholarship. It attracted me to apply to this program, along with support from my supervisor. When I looked at to the program information the program was talking about application of engineering in agriculture so, in the application essay, I brought my thoughts about agriculture mechanization according to the information, in the program there is course about it.
Long story short, during my application process, I tried to find people who were awardees of this scholarship. I was lucky since during this time, I met my wife wkwkwk. I am really grateful because I can find scholarship along with finding my life partner hehe. Once again, I am lucky because finally I was selected to this scholarship. The process of this scholarship was faster than another scholarship. At the time, I also in the process for LPDP DN scholarship without LoA and I choose three university in Indonesia, UGM, UI, and ITB. KOICA scholarship announced first, so I took this scholarship then a week later LPDP gave the announcement, then I also got this scholarship. I was very happy. After I discuss with my family, colleagues, and supervisor, I choose KOICA since in KOICA there is consequences if I don't take this scholarship, I will get punishment by getting blacklist and maybe will impact to the next applicant. So, for giving respect and I will get international experience by learning in other country, I took KOICA.
Once, I have been selected, I need to prepare some documents for applying visa, an exit permit from ministry of foreign affairs, making official passport, permission letter from my office as a study officer, and many things. I think that's all of my general experience as a scholarship hunter and getting KOICA sholarship and LPDP in 2024. For the next, maybe it will be good if I share the process for applying KOICA scholarship and the LPDP scholarship as well.
